Which specific Cyprus blocks are targeted in this drilling campaign?

While the contract covers Eni's general Mediterranean operations, the focus is expected to be on Block 6 to further appraise the Cronos and Zeus discoveries. There is also potential for exploration in adjacent blocks where Eni holds interests, such as Blocks 7 and 11.

Why is Eni securing rigs now for 2027 operations?

The global offshore drilling market is currently facing a shortage of high-specification drillships and semi-submersibles. By securing Saipem's services now, Eni avoids the risk of project delays caused by rig unavailability or surging day rates.

How does this impact the timeline for first gas from Cyprus?

Continuous drilling activity in 2026 and 2027 suggests that Eni is aiming for a development window in the late 2020s. Successful appraisal during this campaign is a prerequisite for the infrastructure investments needed to bring gas to market.

Saipem has solidified its partnership with Eni through a significant multi-year drilling contract covering assets in Cyprus and Ghana. This agreement ensures that Eni has the necessary offshore capacity to execute its 2026-2027 exploration and appraisal strategy in the Eastern Mediterranean. The move reflects a broader industry trend of operators securing high-spec rigs early to avoid supply bottlenecks in a tightening global market.

Key Facts

Saipem announced the award of new offshore drilling contracts from Eni on October 28, 2026.
The scope of work includes operations in the Mediterranean Sea, specifically targeting Eni's interests in Cyprus.
Additional work under this agreement will take place in West Africa, off the coast of Ghana.
The contracts are valued in the multimillion-dollar range, providing significant revenue backlog for Saipem.
The drilling activities are scheduled to take place throughout the 2026 and 2027 calendar years.
This agreement follows a series of successful discoveries by Eni in Cyprus's Block 6, including the Cronos and Zeus wells.

Background & Context

Eni has been a cornerstone of the Cyprus energy sector for over a decade, holding licenses for several blocks in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Following the 2022-2023 discoveries in Block 6, the operator has been working on a fast-track development plan to commercialize these resources. The global offshore rig market has seen increased demand recently, making long-term service agreements essential for maintaining project timelines and managing costs.

Market Impact

This contract provides Saipem with high visibility for its fleet utilization and cash flow through 2027. For the Republic of Cyprus, the commitment of a rig signifies that Eni is moving beyond exploration into a dedicated appraisal and potential development phase for its recent discoveries. This activity is crucial for the eventual construction of subsea infrastructure to transport gas to Egyptian liquefaction plants or local markets. The deal also reinforces the strategic importance of the East Med as a reliable gas source for Europe.

What to Watch

Investors should monitor the specific rig mobilization dates, which are expected to align with the start of the 2027 drilling season. The results of the upcoming Cyprus wells will be the primary catalyst for a Final Investment Decision (FID) on the Block 6 development. Further announcements regarding joint venture partners, such as TotalEnergies, are likely as the drilling program approaches.

Why This Matters for Cyprus

This development is a direct indicator of Eni's intent to proceed with its drilling program in Cyprus's EEZ, which is vital for the country's goal of becoming a regional energy exporter.
